Usma Malik is an academic specialising in narrative structures in contemporary writing. Born in Birmingham, she worked in Education before moving to Manchester to study. She was awarded a Distinction in the Creative Writing MA at the University of Manchester, and went on to study the PhD in Creative Writing, awarded 2019. Usma is also the 2019 inaugural Artist in Residence at the John Rylands Research Institute. She divides her time between the University of Manchester and Manchester Metropolitan University where she teaches on Literature, creative and academic writing courses. She has completed her first novel Hadi.
