Stephen was born in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa and is now a resident in Oxford, United Kingdom. His background is in Graphic Design, Creative Direction and Film, and in 2022 he was an academic visitor to the African Studies Centre, University of Oxford. His debut speculative fiction novel, Soul Searching, was shortlisted for the Nommo Awards in 2021. Stephen is editor of the 2023 edition of Flora Nwapa’s posthumous final novel, The Lake Goddess. His academic essay, “Cosmologies and Languages Building Africanfuturism”, appears in Afro-Centered Futurisms in Our Speculative Fiction published by Bloomsbury in 2024. Stephen is working on a new folk mystery novel entitled Black Sorghum.
